Why Custom-Built Drones Can Outperform Off-the-Shelf Systems

If you've hired drone services in Louisiana over the past few years, there's a good chance the operator showed up with a DJI Mavic or similar consumer-grade system pulled straight out of a backpack. These turnkey drones are capable, convenient, and affordable to operate — but for commercial and industrial clients who depend on their aerial deliverables for documentation, litigation, engineering, or large-format media, they come with a significant limitation that rarely gets discussed upfront: the camera.
At Louisiana Helicam, we've been building and flying custom drone platforms since before most of today's turnkey systems existed. Here's what we've learned — and why it matters for your next project.
---
The Camera Is the Product
When a client hires an aerial services company, they're not paying for drone flight time. They're paying for the imagery. The drone is just the delivery system.
Most consumer and prosumer drone systems — including popular models from DJI's Mavic and Mini series — ship with cameras built around sensors roughly half the physical size of a modern mirrorless or DSLR camera sensor. Manufacturers make this tradeoff deliberately: smaller sensors mean lighter payloads, longer flight times, and lower retail prices. For recreational use or basic social media content, the results are perfectly acceptable.
For commercial work, the math is different.
Louisiana's industrial clients — oil and gas operators, engineering firms, construction contractors, pulp and paper facilities, agricultural operations — routinely need deliverables that hold up at full scale. Trade show displays. Conference room presentations. Insurance documentation. Litigation support. Engineering reports. These applications demand resolution that small-sensor cameras simply can't provide, no matter how well the drone flies.

What a Custom-Built Platform Delivers
Louisiana Helicam's drone platforms are purpose-built to carry professional-grade, large-sensor camera payloads — the same sensor class used by high-end commercial photographers working on the ground. The difference in output is significant:
Resolution that scales.** Images captured on a large-sensor payload retain full detail when printed at 4 feet wide, projected in a boardroom, or submitted as legal exhibits. Small-sensor footage degrades at these sizes.
Superior dynamic range.** Louisiana's industrial environments — refineries, shipyards, chemical facilities, lumber operations — involve extreme lighting contrasts: bright sky, deep shadow, reflective surfaces. Large sensors handle this range far better, producing cleaner images without the blown-out highlights or crushed shadows common in small-sensor footage.
Denser photogrammetric data.** For clients requiring mapping, stockpile surveys, or volumetric calculations, sensor size directly affects point cloud density and accuracy. Our custom mapping platforms produce denser, lower-noise point clouds than standard turnkey mapping drones — which means more accurate deliverables for your surveyor or engineer.
Longer-term value.** A custom platform can be reconfigured as camera technology evolves. A locked consumer drone has a fixed camera with no upgrade path.

Louisiana's Industries Demand More
Louisiana's commercial and industrial economy is one of the most demanding environments for aerial services in the country. The Gulf Coast is home to some of the largest concentrations of petrochemical facilities, offshore infrastructure, timber operations, and active construction in the nation. The projects are large, the stakes are high, and the documentation requirements are specific.
Here's how custom drone platforms serve Louisiana's key industries:
Oil, Gas & Petrochemical
Flare stack inspection, facility documentation, pipeline corridor surveys, and offshore project support all require high-resolution imagery from safe standoff distances. Our platforms are configured for this work, and our team holds TWIC certification and ISNetworld membership — requirements for access to most Louisiana industrial facilities.
Construction & Engineering
Construction progress documentation, time lapse recording, and Building Information Modeling (BIM) support benefit enormously from large-sensor imagery. When a general contractor needs to present progress to an owner, or an engineer needs to document site conditions before a dispute, image quality is directly tied to the credibility of the documentation.
Pulp, Paper & Biomass
Louisiana's timber and biomass industry represents a significant portion of the state's industrial economy. Aerial documentation of mill operations, stockpile surveys, and facility inspections are recurring needs — and ones where our industrial background gives us a meaningful advantage over general-purpose drone operators.
Agriculture
NDVI crop stress surveys and plant count missions require calibrated multispectral sensors, not consumer cameras. Our custom platforms are configured for precision agricultural imaging, giving agronomists and farm managers the data they need to make informed decisions about inputs and interventions.
Real Estate & Commercial Development
Large commercial and industrial properties benefit from the same resolution advantage. When a commercial real estate firm needs imagery that works in a marketing package, a listing, or a development proposal, there's a visible difference between what a large-sensor system delivers and what a consumer drone produces.
---
Priced in Line with Standard Services
One of the most common assumptions we encounter is that custom platforms mean premium pricing. It doesn't.
Louisiana Helicam's rates are competitive with standard drone service providers in the region — including those flying consumer-grade equipment. We've made the investment in custom platforms because we believe clients deserve the best possible deliverable for the price they're paying. You shouldn't have to pay more to get imagery that actually works at full resolution.
---
20 Years of Gulf Coast Experience
Louisiana Helicam was founded in 2005 — before the commercial drone industry as most people know it existed. We built our first platforms from the ground up, developed our workflows through real-world industrial projects, and grew our credentials alongside the FAA's evolving regulatory framework.
Today we hold FAA Part 107 certification, an FAA Section 333 Exemption, TWIC certification, ISNetworld membership, TAPPISAFE compliance, and $4 million in UAS-specific liability coverage. We serve clients across Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Georgia.
When the shot has to be right — for a major project, a critical inspection, or a deliverable that will be used in court — experience and equipment both matter.
